The design and layout of your website copy have a huge impact on its readability. That’s the obvious part. The not so obvious part is how this affects your conversion rates. A website with text that’s difficult to read is unappealing and customers will likely leave your site, causing your conversion rate to drop. Great typography ensures ease of access to your website’s content, it can highlight important information and it can help communicate your brand personality. Here are a few ways you can use typography to enhance your website design:
- Three’s Your Lucky Number
Keep things simple by using a maximum of three font families on your site: one for the headline, sub headline and body text.
In general, sans-serif fonts are easier to read on the web. Using a clean sans-serif font works well across devices as it’s more readable on smaller screens. But, keep in mind that not all fonts that work on a desktop will work on mobile, so choose a font that’s optimal across a spectrum of screen sizes.
Between 15 and 18 px is a good font-size for body and paragraph text. It’s not small enough to make you squint and it’s not too big to have your readers endlessly scrolling or swiping through your content.
Have a look at your favourite websites and blogs and make a note of the font-families they use. A tool that can help you do this is a plug-in called Fount. From the Fount website, you can drag and drop the plug-in into your bookmarks bar. It’s super easy to use.

Are you using only the best UI Web Design features? We look at some unpopular web design features and the mistakes you could be making on your website design.
- Complex Layout and Readability
Your website should be seamless and easy to read. Pages containing multiple graphs, links, pictures or overlapping texts create clutter and makes it difficult for users to navigate through. Be aware of bad colour schemes such as light text on a white background or text that are too small to read. Instead, the text should be an average size of 16 px or more and headings should be bold and well-defined. Avoid unnecessary links or irrelevant pictures.
Correct content marketing is important to ensure that your website is effective in the digital age. Websites that lead to updated or outdated links can impact your business and prevent users from returning to your site. Ensure that links are not broken and that your social media links and contact details are listed clearly in the website on top of the page for quick access.
Even the most corporate websites should contain engaging topics and a website that is fun for visitors to use. Adding a good design theme, bright pictures and easy to use customized buttons are effective in this regard. This will get users to stay and interact with your web design, as well as help your search engine optimization.

When embarking on a website design project, most people know they need an ‘About Us page’, but by the looks of things, few people know what the purpose of it is. Browsing through About Us pages in your industry will show you that there is still a lot of uncertainty about what type of content should be on this page.
Instead of copying and pasting your mission statement or having unfocused sub-category pages of team members talking about their diplomas and hobbies, here are a few guidelines to follow to make sure your About Us page is effective and converts readers to customers:
All of your product and service pages should be relevant to each specific product and service. The About Us page is where you can tell your story. It is the page that people click on when they need to know or want to verify the following information:
- Whether your company is legit,
- What your history is, and
- What your business is all about.
-
Get Your Tone Right
Are you a team of sharp lawyers, quirky creatives, or prudent financial advisers? Make sure the tone of the copy of your About Us page aligns with your corporate culture and the image you want to portray about your business. Regardless of how professional or fun you want to sound, make sure it is clear that you are passionate about what you do.
-
Only Tell the Story of Team Members if it Adds Value
Sometimes it is a good idea to give people a photo and a write-up of the people they will be working with at your company, but it is not a must-have for an About Us page. A lawyer, for example, may want to showcase his or her qualifications and career history to give the firm more credibility. If it makes sense for your business, audience and website, you could consider a team photo of your staff on your About Us page instead of individual write-ups on each team member, for example.

Are you considering incorporating a chatbot in your website design? This isn’t a tool that is only useful for large financial institutions and insurance companies. Here are the top three reasons why a chatbot should be part of your website design:
- Free Up Your Customer Service Resources
Many brick-and-mortar stores have a ‘returns’ desk and most service and products providers have a call centre that manages queries from customers. How much of these resources will you free up if your customers are able to get their questions answered by a chatbot? Many business owners will argue that their clients want their queries and issues to be solved by a real person, but this often isn’t the case. What people want is for their questions to be answered swiftly and promptly, and a chatbot is your 24/7 customer service agent.
- Personalised Responses
Thanks to machine learning, chatbots can be designed and developed to give people very personalised responses. Many times, people mistakenly believe they are chatting with a real person. While the idea isn’t to mislead anyone, you can ensure that customers are being helped in a conversational, individualised way thanks to Natural Language Processing.
- Gain Actionable Business Insights
With chatbots, you will have digital assistants who are gathering huge amounts of data about your customers. You will be able to pick up on trends and issues in real time, gain actionable insights, and incorporate these insights into your business strategy and digital marketing strategy.

How is the world of website design changing? Here are three web design trends to consider:
Typography
Typography has changed along with user behaviour. Bold typography design helps highlight headlines and sub headings. Being bold is different to being distracting. Be sure to only use fonts and sizes that support your content and purpose (don’t try to overcomplicate these elements for the sake of graphic design).
Cinemagraphs, gifs and UI animations
There is a massive drive for mobile first design, which means that load times have to be considered when designing a website and uploading content to the site. Search engines are penalising sites with slow loading speeds, which is why things like cinemagraphs, gifs and UI animations are becoming increasingly popular. Videos increase the load times of pages, but the aforementioned video alternatives are quicker to load. Concentration times are also becoming shorter and video formats are a great way to get information across quickly and in a digestible way.
Intelligent chatbots and language processing
Intelligent chatbots have become a must-have in many industries. People expect to be able to get information from a chatbot instead of having to pick up their phone to call a business or send the business a message on the site.
A chatbot is something that has to be considered in a web design. The chatbot messaging box shouldn’t detract from your other design elements and content, and people should be able to continue browsing your site when they are asking questions or chatting on the site.

Online marketing for ecommerce websites can be very complicated because there are so many different things that you can do. Here are a few tips that we recommend ecommerce sites focus on first:
- Use a good shopping cart
Shopify, Woo commerce and Big Commerce are shopping carts that work very well. Not only do they seamlessly slot into website designs, but they are also great for SEO and paid search. These carts have everything you need to scale your business and you will also have the support team you need to back you up.
- SEO your product pages
You need to spend time optimising your product pages for both SEO and design. Make sure that your products have descriptive titles (don’t list a product by a name that only you would recognise – opt for something that people would be searching for online). Do some keyword research to figure out what people are searching for and write a good product description as well.
- Professional product shots
Product photography is very important. Hire a professional to take clear, smooth and high-quality images of all your products. If you can do a product video, this can also be massively valuable.
- Trust badges
Include trust badges on your pages. If you offer fast shipping or free shipping, for example, this should be displayed in a way that grabs attention.
- Product reviews
People want to know that other consumers have bought your product and that they are happy with it. Ask for reviews and include them underneath the product descriptions.
